Sock Enjoys TV

I finished my sock on Saturday evening while watching Starsky and Hutch.
My sock likes Starsky especially.
Here she is:
Sock also enjoys the English Premier League.
Here she is comfortably resting on DH's foot:
I've started on another sock - another pair - but I've also cast on for sock number 2 for this pair.
I have also counted my sock yarn - I have enough to make 7 more pairs of socks.
I'm becoming obsessed.
Is it showing?

It's Friday, Yea! So why is it snowing?

I barely made it through class last night.
It had nothing to do with not finishing my reading.
Honest.
(Fingers crossed)
Really, it is extremely difficult to focus on Edmund Spenser when you can barely focus on driving when you're on the road.
My cold/semi-flu is subsiding but the coughing continues to give me a headache.
But I was glad I stayed in class because we had some very interesting discussions, as always.
Of course it didn't help that when I went out at break I saw the snow/rain. Come on, it's almost April, why are we having another storm?
I don't think we're expected to get more than 3" but I'm supposed to be looking at crocuses popping out their beautiful purple heads from the ground, not look to see if they've even been able to break through the bed of snow in the yard.
Guess it is a good I'm still working on socks because our house is still cold. Unfortunately, since I knit at a snail's pace I don't know if I will have sock #2 of my second pair done before spring comes.
And since you asked about my sock I can tell you that the heel has been successfully completed and I am now working on the foot.
No pictures, sorry, but I'm sure you can visualize.
I'm anxious to get started on the second sock and then get started on a bunch of other socks.
Do you think if I had different socks in various stages of completion I would get a pair done quicker? Or do you think I should just focus on one?
Because I have to tell you that I am ready to have about 6 or 7 socks going at the same time.
I'm loving this!
Bring on the weekend!

Thursday Quiz - What's in a Name

Well it is Thursday again.
Again, you ask.
Why yes.
And Little Kiddles, what time is it then?
Why, it is time for a quiz!
Today we will discover what your name means.
Allegedly.
Although this is relatively spot on for me.

What Julie Means

You are fair, honest, and logical. You are a natural leader, and people respect you.
You never give up, and you will succeed... even if it takes you a hundred tries.
You are rational enough to see every part of a problem. You are great at giving other people advice.
You are a very lucky person. Things just always seem to go your way. And because you're so lucky, you don't really have a lot of worries. You just hope for the best in life. You're sometimes a little guilty of being greedy. Spread your luck around a little to people who need it.
You are relaxed, chill, and very likely to go with the flow. You are light hearted and accepting. You don't get worked up easily. Well adjusted and incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is.
You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing. You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long. You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.
You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone. You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together. At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

So is this accurate for me?
Well I have to say, Bobby knows.
Because I'm the one for whom he tosses and turns and cries all through the night.

Tell me more, Bobby.

Hey, I did it again

There's no "whoops" in that title.
And this is not an homage to Britney.
Please.
Although I did watch How I Met Your Mother on Monday night.
It was funny - but it usually is anyway.
But that is not what I am here to discuss.
I have not been feeling well lately, not well at all.
I'm getting a bit better - no fever, just general malaise, excessive coughing, and sinus issues. So I stayed home from work on Tuesday with DN2 - she was out of school on Monday and Tuesday but I worked part of the day on Monday.
For the record, she is now a convert and is close to believing that tomato soup and grilled cheese is the best lunch EVER. We've had it two days in a row.
Essentially I've had knitting time. I should be reading, but I really cannot focus and I need to hurry up and get focused because I have class on Thursday.
Fortunately I have been able to knit on my Sassy Stripes Sock and today after my nap (hey, I'm sick!), I decided to go for it and work on the heel.
Well guess what.
I did it!

That, my friends, is a sock with a heel.
Sorry it is not a better picture but the batteries are dead in the camera and I'm using my cell phone camera.
Now I just have to work on the gusset. Picking up stitches is always a chore for me, I just don't do it "pretty".
But I've knit a heel again and I'm so psyched!
As a matter of fact I read their directions and thought, well that just sounds silly and incomplete so I am just going to do what I know I need to do.
And it worked!
Now you know I haven't been feeling well but I was well enough to stock up on my favorite seasonal candy.
I went to the store on Monday night (sick, yes, but we were in desperate need of essentials at the house).
I went to the corner of the store where they stock the seasonal candy only to discover - to my horror - that all the candy had been replaced by....paper towels! I actually had a moment of panic when I thought to myself, can I really get through a year without this candy?
I couldn't answer it, honestly. To my surprise as I walked closer I saw that a small section of the shelves contained my candy.
Big huge sigh of relief.
And it was on sale - half price!
So I bought 12 bags - one bag for each month.
This is what it came to:
SN2 was with me and laughed. I let him laugh because I did not even feel embarassed in the store.
Nope.
Not one bit.
Because when the summer comes and then the fall, I will have my Cadbury Mini-Eggs to eat.
My friend Jean is a convert to this candy too.
Have you stocked up on your supply yet, Jean?

Long, hard winter = no pussywillows

Yesterday was Dyngus Day.
I had actually forgotten all about this holiday until I was listening to a Buffalo radio station on Saturday and they mentioned it.
Given the fact that I'm not Polish and do not live in an area that is rich in Polish ethnicity might account for the fact that I had forgotten. But Buffalo is and man do they go all out for Dyngus Day especially considering that they are the self-proclaimed Dyngus Day Capital of America.
Check out this website if you think I'm kidding.
So according to them, Dyngus Day is:
Historically a Polish-American tradition, Dyngus Day celebrates the end of the often restrictive observance of lent and the joy of Easter. Over the decades, Dyngus Day has become a wonderful holiday to celebrate Polish-American culture, heritage and traditions.
Fortunately they give you some valuable tips - keep this in mind for next year's Dyngus Day:
As the popular polka anthem explains, “Everybody’s Polish On Dyngus Day!” Many parties begin during the mid-morning on the Monday after Easter with a large buffet of traditional Easter foods (kielbasa, ham, fresh breads, eggs). It is common to hear polka music on Dyngus Day with the mandatory dancing of at least one polka. Many parties continue well into daylight on Tuesday. (A tip to the first time Dyngus participant….take Tuesday off from work.)

So why the pussywillows? You may find your true love on Dyngus Day. Of course if you're married you will probably just get drunk. But if you're single, bring along some water and pussywillows:
This is a yearly debate among Dyngus Day revelers. The tradition holds true that on Easter Monday boys would sprinkle the girls with water and tap them with pussywillows. On Easter Tuesday, the women would return the favorite. At modern Dyngus Day parties it is common practice that both men and women trade water and pussywillow equally.
I had never even heard of this holiday or celebrated it until I was 18 or 19 because this is not something that they celebrate in the greater Rochester area. I remember after I first joined the Marine Corps I would mention Dyngus Day to people and they would just look at me as if I were completely out of my mind. Sometimes they would do the same thing when I mentioned Euchre. Have you ever played it? That seems to be a regional thing too.
Now unfortunately this year there is a shortage of pussywillows, primarily because of our long, hard winter.
I have no doubt that this stopped people from drinking lots and lots of piwo or vodka.
Perhaps we'll hit it up next year, when everyone is not quite so sick around my house.
Yes, I'm spreading it.

I will not get sick, I will not get sick, I will not...

...oh crap, I am sick.
It started as a little tickle on Wednesday morning. By the afternoon when I left work it was a full compression on my chest and the coughing had begun. I rushed to the store and I've been ODing on OTC cold and flu medicine since Wednesday evening but it is a Sisyphean task. Once sickness comes it's there until it's over.
Of course I have taken so much medicine that now I do not know if I am loopy because I'm sick or because I'm over-medicated.
Or if it is just my natural demeanor.
Hmmm....
I've been so out of it that although I have been able to accomplish mindless knitting - stockinette on my second sock and K2 P2 on my new socks - I haven't been able to focus on much more than that. As a matter of fact I am at the point where I can do the toe on sock #2 but because I am having so much trouble focusing I am afraid to work on it until the fog in my brain clears.
I can only hope that this doesn't turn into the flu.
Although I would like to go back to bed - not to work.
They say this cough is called the 100 Day Cough.
I have to tell you, there are not enough Depends in the world that could see me through a cough for that length of time.
Okay, rather than leave you with that nasty thought I'll leave you with something better - some vintage Jeannie C. Riley (LOVE her boots!!!).

Who knew the PTA had so much power.

(Note at 7:40: And on top of everything else, it is snowing again! Come on, it is after Easter! Can we please have some relief?!?!)

I know, I have never done a quiz every Thursday, but perhaps I might.
How about that.
So here you go.
Find out what year you belong in.

You Belong in 1950

You're fun loving, romantic, and more than a little innocent. See you at the drive in!

For the record, I LOVE the drive in!!!
But innocent?
Hardly.

An Anniversary on the Horizon

I have a blogiversary coming up.
Can you believe it?
I can't.
It will be 2 years since my inauspicious attempts at blogging began.
I'm still screwing up the HTML code, but I'm a firm believer that it is the random crap I throw into posts that counts and not how pretty it looks.
It's the maxim on how I live my life, so I sure hope it's true.
I should buy myself a cake from Phillips European for my blogiversary, eat more than one piece, go into a sugar high, and write even more bizarre stuff.
Because trust me, I keep it toned down for my blog.
In the meantime I have successfully navigated past the heel on my second sock and am knitting the gusset as we speak. Well, it's not that successful of a navigation, but it's a go.
I'll wear my wonky socks with pride, I just won't invite people in for a closer look.
And trust me, no one wants to look closely at my feet anyway.
I'll leave you with today's wonderful Ballard Street:

Look at those smiles. They are obviously not reading Edmund Spenser.

Make Way for Ducks

We went out to breakfast on Saturday morning and on our way to the restaurant we couldn't figure out why cars in front of us on the street were stopping.
Then we saw them.
Ducks.
They were walking down the street and made their way to the Dollar General parking lot right next door to the restaurant to which we were going.
Were they headed there for the hungry man breakfast too?
Or perhaps they were looking for some bargains in the store?
Of course not wanting to pass up an opportunity to blog about ducks again, I took some pictures. And after our last experience I did not want to get too close.
Hopefully they made it home okay.

This Sock Knitting is Addictive

I know I am not doing a great job yet, but I'm excited by the possibilities.
Turn one heel and you can save the world!!
That sounds like a wonderful campaign slogan.
Honestly, college would seem like a cakewalk if we could teach the kids how to knit when they're young, learn how to turn a heel, and then send them off into the world.
They could do anything!
It's a wonderful self-esteem booster, and I'm so pleased with my first sock, even if the toe is all wonky.
So what does a knitter do next?
Cast on for another pair of socks.
Well first DN2 and I went to Ben Franklin on Friday morning and explored their bag sale.
25% off everything with white stickers and 10% off all sale items.
I think we walked away with a fair amount of items, thank you Visa.
Here's my haul:
Now I didn't buy great sock yarn, it is Ben Franklin after all, but I'm happy to practice with some acrylic yarn while I learn the craft. I have a stash of lovely sock yarn that I have received from wonderful friends and fantastic swap partners, but I want to save that until I'm a little more sure of myself.
So in the meantime I'll work on some cheaper yarn. Plus I don't mind walking around collecting cat and dog hair with machine-washable yarn, because I'll tell you we have a lot of it. And I think some of it gets knit into things.
Back to my sock.
Yes, I cast on for a Sassy Stripes Sock with the Moda Dea yarn in Polo (that's the reddish-blue variegated one in the pic) but I felt guilty (and cold) walking around with only one sock on. I knew I had to complete the pair of my first socks.
I cast on for the second sock.
Then someone wanted to cuddle.
It's nice to have 2 socks to go back and forth with because when I'm tired of one I switch to the other.
Fortunately yesterday was a day to indulge the most wonderful of deadly sins - sloth.
I watched Ghost Hunters and knit for most of the day.
I might have to do it again today, although I have cleared off most of my recorded programs on DVR.
Well, there's always movies to watch.
I'll do whatever it takes to get these socks knit.
Not rain, nor snow, nor children begging to be fed will keep me from my appointed duty.

Weather Woes

You know we got hammered by a huge snowstorm this past weekend, and I was too busy working on my sock to complain about it.
So I'll do it now.
It began on Friday afternoon.
I went ice skating with DN2 and her class.
Here I am in my skates at the rink:When we emerged from the rink the snow had begun.
It didn't stop until Sunday.
Saturday was the scariest - DH and I were sitting upstairs and there was a bright flash of light. We thought DN2 had taken a picture or something and we looked at each other and asked that question. All of a sudden there was a loud clap of thunder.
Thunder and lightning and snow. (See note.)
I really believed the world was coming to an end.
It was scary!
So what did I do?
Kept on knitting.
A true Madame Defarge.
So now we still have about 6-8 inches of snow in the yard, plowed piles that exceed 10 feet in height in some parking lots, and a prediction for a bit more snow this weekend.
And you say the beginning of spring is coming soon?
We will have more snow on Easter than we did on Christmas.
At least our grass will be nice and green this summer.
If this snow ever melts.
Guess I had better knit more socks to wear with my sandals this spring.
Because I'm such an expert sock knitter now.
Pause for riotous laughter, including my own.
Have a great Thursday!

Note: Apparently this phenomenon is called "Thundersnow" and is very rare but does occur in, get this, the Great Lakes area. Gosh, guess where I live. I have to tell you it was actually very scary.

Scenes from an afternoon

View from the window.

Bring on the heat.

Now off to start sock #2, hopefully without many of the mistakes I made on this one.

If I had a beer

You know, if I had a beer for every time I heard the word "sordid" in relation to our governor, I don't think I would sober up for a while.
Anyone remember the "Hi Bob" game?

Not without mistakes

My sock is not without mistakes.
But who cares!!!
I don't.
Seriously.
It is so far from perfect it is looking perfect in the rear.
Does that make sense?
What makes sense is that I actually got the heel done, did some completely imperfect gussets, saw where I erred, will correct it next time, and am working on the foot.
Well almost, I still have about 5 rows on the gussets and then I'm on to the body of the foot (tee hee, because a foot has a body, right?).
I have to say that I don't know if this sock will even fit anyone in the house, but again, who cares!!!
No pictures yet, but I will leave you with a picture and link to the book from which I learned and share a story as to how this came about.
Here is the book:
This girl in my class asked me one night if I knit the hat I was wearing.
I said that I had and she said she recognized the yarn (Wool-Ease) because she uses it for socks. She's a graduate student, has about $90K in student loans, she can't afford Koigu KPPPM for her socks and that is understandable.
Anyway, she had said that a group of her friends had learned how to knit and they knit all the time, and now that she had graduated from college and her friends had scattered she didn't have anyone to knit with anymore.
But she told me she had learned how to knit socks, and I expressed amazement because many of you know of my lifelong (yes, I'm sticking with the hyperbole) desire to knit socks. So the next week she brought in the book for me to borrow along with a sock where she had sewn up the toe wrong but that she gave to me as a sample so I could look at the heel.
Props!
So using her book I have been working on the basic sock which is really an ankle sock, not a big cuff which is a big deal, because to me if you're learning and you make this sock with which you have a huge investment on the cuff only to screw up the heel it is very depressing.
I have been depressed.
But now I'm cooking with fire.
And dang, I have a book to read too.
Again, the choices I have to make - knit or read.
If only Orlando Furioso were a book on tape - but it's doubtful.

Apologies

I'm sorry, I can't talk right now.
I'm busy knitting a sock.
Wheee!!!
(And for those interested, I'm at the picking up stitches part around the heel - how about that, eh - progress!)

Swimming

DN2 had a swim meet this weekend so we've been running around with that a bit.
I had to work as a timer on Friday night and that was interesting - always fun.
I do have an observation though.
Lately the boys who swim have taken to wearing the suits called jammers, and they look like this:

And when you see a kid wearing this kind of suit, well it's almost obscene for the lack of coverage:

Now that's just an observation, I'm not going all Mrs. Robinson on anyone.
Puh-lese.
I did have plenty of opportunity today to work on something with which I have struggled for a while.
I don't want to jinx myself and say yet, so you'll have to wait.
Now I'm off to watch Here Come the Brides for a while and work on my project.

Cheers!
